What Other Projects?

SOG's Project

What other projects would you like to see here? Perhaps a news section that people can create articles, training, or anything you can think of. Be creative and tell us what type of site the fire service could really use. Post your comments here.

We are looking for people to lead collaboration teams. If you have one you would like to add and would like others to help out, post it here.

I'm working on SOGs and training to reduce LODDs, injuries, and near misses, not just directly due to fires and other responses, but the indirect ones, such as heart and stroke events, and vehicle crashes. These last two together take more lives than the dangerous work that we do.

I can use your help, brothers & sisters, because there aren't enough fires and emergencies in the world for me to learn from my own mistakes. I'd like to borrow your's.

We deal with some of the toughest people that we know, and we admire our brothers & sisters for their skills, talents, and achievements. One of the reasons that I am a firefighter is I want to be like you, a hardworking, hard training, caring, and objective oriented person who knowingly takes risks so that others may live. I care about you, and you care about me, that's what makes the brotherhood.

I don't want to send you flowers, either in the hospital or in the funeral parlor, but sometimes I have to do that for a brother or sister. That is why I want to protect you from the dangers that lie out there. It might be heroic to get injured or killed rescuing a child, but most injuries and LODDs happen because of tunnel vision, focusing on one part of the job and missing the big picture. This happens, even to someone who knows that it happens, someone like me, who got caught in a flashover because I was focusing on the next, next right thing, one objective beyond where I should have been. I may have learned something that night, but I am not fool enough to think that it won't happen again. That's why I need you, to get me out of the jam, just like David did that night. And that's why you need me, and why we both need SOGs, to protect us from ourselves.

So, this is my longwinded way of asking for your help. How do we write SOGs so that the brothers & sisters buy into them? How do we train to compliance with them? How do we protect ourselves from ourselves?

I think this would be a great project and certainly there is a lot of interest in this based on other postings and requests. I've posted a Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) under that Topics to help get things started. Hope this is helpful!--Michael 00:16, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
